Not long ago, 21MC was commissioned by XLR8R magazine to create a custom typeface to use as their main display typeface to run for 5 issues. June’s issue marks the first public exposure and commissioned piece to use 21MC’s Creole Typography, a brand new 21MC exclusive concept we’ve been in the lab developing since last December.

Creole Typography is the name we have been calling all the type we make here at 21MC. The name refers to the process of “Afro-eyez’n” roman standard typography with the visual references and experiences of Afrikans in the Americas (i.e. Black accents and patois, Afro-American spiritual mark-making processes, visual rhythm in Black “folk” art, etc.). If the goal of 21MC is to create a new Black visual language in design, then the goal of our Creole Typography is to establish a way of using typography and letterforms to communicate the Black voice visually through our letters and typography.

This particular typeface, which we named Negropocalypse 7″ Rare OPP, was based off abstract memories of shopping for bootleg black crust punk records in the 90’s mixed with the boldness of graffiti throw-ups on the walls of NYC in the late 80’s. Ideas of the Underworld, Bawon Samedi, and Lil Wayne also made their way into this typeface as influences on the form. Negropocalypse 7″ Rare OPP comes only in one weight, but comes in both X’s and O’s as the counter forms. Very nerdy designer things happening over herrrr… + more images to come.

We’ve been making a lot of moves over at 21MC, doing what we love and working with people we like.

We partied after the M.I.A. show on Friday night in Brooklyn with our friends Dante Fried Chicken, Million $ Mano, and of course, Rye Rye. Peep the flyer designed by 21MC. The type we designed for Rye Rye was our gift to her for her birthday and high school graduation.
