Chrecession Lacroix by M.J. / July 19

Inspired by haute couture legend Christian Lacroix who recently pulled of a $0 budget couture collection, 21MC starts to brainstorms it’s fall show. Apparently the house of Lacroix, with no money to speak of and a staff cut to 12, conjured ensembles out of its creative ether, relying on his iconic play on silhouette and shape more than ever.

This haute couture show, which some are saying may be Christian Lacroix’s last was held in front of an audience of only 280 people at the Salon des Boisiers in the Musée des Arts Décoratifs. The embroiderers and lace-makers, worked for free. The creations were cut from bolts of fabric the house already had on hand.

The collection was dark, a good mix of minimal and gaudy and overall… quite South American Retro, which was a bit of a change from the the spring 09 Gypsy collection shown last year with it’s vibrant colors and elaborate drapings.

With shoes donated by Bruno and models wore either a headwrap or a hat, which I assume helped to cut expenses. However the show was not a total penny pinch. The Pièce de Résistance was this wildy over embellished gown, adorned by a virgin mary like headdress. A testament to what can be done when “must” is a rule. What recession?
